SIRAJUDDIN GHAZNAWI

Abu Hafs Sirajuddin Umar ibn Ishaq ibn Ahmad al-Ghaznawi ash-Shibli

Sirajuddin Ghaznawi was born in Ghazni around 704/1304. He is known by the nickname Sirajul Hindi. He received his first education in his country and the cities of Turkestan. He studied jurisprudence from scholars such as Wajihuddin Dihlawi, Shamsuddin Khatib Duli, Sirajuddin Saqafi and Ruknuddin Badauni. Later, he went on a pilgrimage and received mystical education from Sheikh Hizr in Makkah based on the work "Awarif al-Maarif" by Shihabuddin Suhrawardi. In 740/1339, he went to the city of Cairo, where he visited before, and enjoyed the knowledge of scholars such as Alauddin ibn Turkmani, Mahmud ibn Abdurrahman Isfahani, and Ahmad ibn Mansur Jawhari.

Ghaznawi, who attracted the attention of state officials with his high intelligence, fluent speech and his works, was appointed viceroy of the Egyptian Qadi al-qudat Jamaluddin Turkmani. After the death of Jamaluddin Turkmani in 769/1368, Ghaznawi, who was later appointed to the military qadi of Egypt, took the position of Qadi al-qudat. Ghaznawi, who remained in this position until the end of his life, also taught tafsir classes in Ibn Tulun Mosque due to the death of Zainuddin Bistami. Ghaznawi died in Cairo in 773/1372.

His works. 1. "Al-Ghurrah al-Munifa fi Tahqiqi ba’di Masail al-Imam Abi Hanifa". (Cairo: 1950; Beirut: 1986). In this work, in which the author explains the reasons for his preference for the Hanafi sect, he translated Fakhruddin Razi's Persian work entitled "al-Burhan al-Bahiyyah", which criticized the Hanafis, into Arabic and criticized it. 2. "Sharh al-Aqida at-Tahawiyya" (Kazan: 1311). 3. "At-Tawshih". It is a commentary on the work "al-Hidaya" written by Burhanuddin Marginani. 4. "Al-Fatawa". It is the author's book of fatwas. 5. "Zubdat al-Ahkam fi Ikhtilaf al-Mazahib al-Aimma al-Arba'a al-A'lam". This is a work on comparative jurisprudence showing the differences between sects. In 1983, Ibrahim Ahmad ibn Sulaiman Omar published his master's thesis on this work at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University. 6. "Sharh al-Mughni". This is a commentary on the work "al-Mughni" by Khabbazi. The 1st volume of the work was prepared by Satarya Afandi Zain (1986), and the 2nd volume was prepared for publication as a doctoral thesis by Muhammad Ahmad Kuli (1987) at Ummul Qura University in Makkah. 7. "Kashif Ma'ani al-Badi'". This is a 4-volume commentary on "Badi' an-Nizam" by Muzaffaruddin Ibn Saah on usul al-fiqh. 8. "Lawaih al-Anwar fir-radd 'ala man ankara 'alal-'arifin lataifal asrar". This is a work written to prove the merits of saints. 9. "Mukhtasar at-Talhis". This is a summary of the commentary prepared by Ali ibn Balaban Farisi on “at-Talhis” by Muhammad ibn Abbad Hilati.
