MUHAMMAD IBN MUQATIL RAZI

(died 248/862)

Muhammad Razi was educated by scholars such as Muhammad Shaybani and Abu Muti’ Balkhi. He worked as a judge of the city of Ray and made a great contribution to the spread of the teachings of Abu Hanifa there. His efforts to spread this doctrine were especially evident in the city of Ray.

In the work “Mizan al-I’tiqad”, Zahabi stated that Muhammad ibn Muqatil Razi is mistakenly called Marwazi, but in fact his nisbah is not Marwazi.

Ibn Hajar notes in his work “Lisan al-Mizan” that the famous historian scholar Muhammad ibn Jarir Tabari narrated hadith from Muhammad Razi. Imam Bukhari also heard hadith from him, but did not narrate from him.

Ibn Hajar cited the following interesting information in this regard: “Imam Bukhari says: “Muhammad ibn Muqatil narrated us hadith. He was called Razi. “All people from the heavens to the earth relied on the one who narrated hadith from Muhammad ibn Muqatil”. This confirms the authenticity of his narrations.”

Razi was the imam of the Ahl al-Ra’y in the city of Ray and he died there. He was one of the leader scholars in jurisprudence. He narrated hadith from Sufyan ibn Uyaina, Abu Muawiya, Ibn Fadl, Maharibi, Hakam ibn Salam and other scholars. In turn, Muhammad Ayyub, Humami, Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hakim Tirmidhi, Ahmad ibn Khalid ibn Ja’far, Husain ibn Hamdan and others narrated from him. He was a follower of Muhammad ibn Hasan.
