THE ROLE OF THE TASHKENT ISLAMIC INSTITUTE IN THE STUDY OF MATURIDIYYA

In recent years, the in-depth study of the invaluable heritage of great scholars in our country, the preservation and further development of our national and religious values, the systematic study of sources expressing high human ideas, their effective use in religious education, spiritual and moral education. Several good deeds are being done to restore the traditions. In particular, at the initiative of the President, new research centers (Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, International Research Centers named after Imam Bukhari, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Maturidi), scientific schools (schools of hadith, kalam, tasawwuf, aqeedah, fiqh) and education Institutions (Mir Arab Higher Madrasah, School of Hadith Studies, International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan, Imam Tirmidhi Madrasah) were established. From 1971 to 2017, the Tashkent Islamic Institute named after Imam Bukhari was the only higher education institution in the field. In the last 3 years, the Mir Arab Higher Madrasah and the School of Hadith were established. Following the modern requirements for clergy, higher and secondary special religious educational institutions, religious organizations, and research centers under the auspices of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan to train specialists who are well versed in religious and secular sciences, able to resist ideological attacks and reject foreign ideas. A new continuous system was formed to ensure continuity between the two. Curricula and science programs at both levels of education have been redesigned in an integrated manner by admitting only madrassa graduates to higher Islamic educational institutions.

Following the traditional Hanafi and Maturidi teachings, the specialty is based on the method of religious education (“manhaji”) formed in the madrasas of our country for centuries, on the basis of the authoritative works of our great scholars, sharhs, and hashiyas. The science of Aqeedah (kalam) and the doctrine of Maturidiyya are taught at the Tashkent Islamic Institute in the following order within the discipline of Aqeedah based on continuity with the education in madrassas: 1. In the 2nd year of madrassas, the text of Abu Hanifa’s (may God bless him and grant him peace) work “Fiqh al-Akbar” is memorized and easily explained. 2. In the 3rd year of madrassas, the text of “Bad’ul Amali” by Sirajuddin Ushi is memorized in full and the commentary of Mulla Ali Qari's “Dhaw’ul Maali” is read in full. 3. In the 4th year of madrassas, the text of Imam Tahawi’s “Aqidatut Tahawiyyah” is memorized in full, and the commentary of Abu Hafs Ghaznavi's “Sharhu Aqidat at-Tahawiyyah” is taught in full. 4. At the Tashkent Islamic Institute in the 1st year the work of “Badrul Anwar Sharhu Fiqhil Akbar” by Nizal Ali Rashsha is taught. Since the text of al-Fiqh al-Akbar is memorized in madrasas, the main focus is on teaching this authoritative commentary in the Maturidiyya school. 5. In the 2nd year at the Tashkent Islamic Institute, the text of Al-Aqeedah an-Nasafiyya by Umar Nasafi is completely memorized and the work of “Sharhu Aqaeed Nasafiyya” by Sa'duddin Taftazani is taught. 6. Following paragraph 9 of the “Roadmap to support the study of Imam Maturidi and the doctrine of Maturidiyya in 2020-2024” approved by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on August 11, 2020, No DP-4802, in the 3rd year at the Tashkent Islamic Institute a new special course entitled “Maturidiyya Doctrine and Modern Ideological Views” was introduced. In short, the Tashkent Islamic Institute named after Imam Bukhari under the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan intended to educate students consistently and systematically in the spirit of devotion to universal traditions and values, and respect for our rich national and spiritual heritage. The most important task is to gain a deeper understanding of the complex socio-political and religious processes taking place in the world and the region, as well as to train as a specialist in the field of religion that meets today’s requirements.
